Guest Speakers
Dr. Bukola Salami
Professor Bukola Salami is a Full Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Black and Racialized Peoples’ Health at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, with a cross-appointment in the Faculty of Nursing. Her internationally acclaimed research explores policies and practices shaping migrant health and the health of Black communities, contributing to over 100 funded projects totaling $250 million. She founded the African Child and Youth Migration Network, connecting 42 scholars across four continents, and co-led the creation of the Institute for Intersectional Studies at the University of Alberta.
In 2020, she launched the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program, which nurtures emerging Black leaders and inspired the first mental health clinic tailored for Black Canadians in Western Canada. A trusted voice in policy, Professor Salami has presented her research to policymakers, including Canada’s House of Commons, leading to meaningful policy advancements. She currently serves as Vice President of the Canadian Nurses Association and holds leadership roles on several national advisory boards, including SSHRC and CIHR.
Duane Wiafe, MSW, RSW
Duane Wiafe is a registered social worker, psychotherapist, and founder of FITT Social Work Services Inc., based in Woodstock, Ontario. He holds a Master of Social Work from Memorial University and a Bachelor of Social Work from York University. With over 17 years of experience, Duane specializes in trauma rehabilitation, forensic social work, fitness-based mental health, and Africentric healing frameworks. His career includes 16 years with Correctional Service Canada and extensive work supporting Canadian Armed Forces members. Duane integrates EMDR therapy, fitness coaching, and African Indigenous knowledge, notably incorporating Adinkra symbols to foster resilience, cultural identity, and healing. He is a Master Trainer for STRONG Nation™ Canada and part-time faculty in the Social Service Worker program at Conestoga College. Duane is committed to advancing trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices that dismantle systemic barriers and strengthen marginalized communities.
Aboubacar Kadogo
Aboubacar Kadogo is a distinguished Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner who has dedicated nearly a decade to advancing healthcare in northern Canadian communities. Since 2016, he has served Nunavut across critical care, public health, and infection prevention and control, notably contributing to Qikiqtani General Hospital’s perfect 100% score during the 2019 Accreditation Canada survey. A key leader during the COVID-19 pandemic, he played an essential role in safeguarding healthcare delivery and public safety. Transitioning from registered nurse to nurse practitioner, Aboubacar exemplifies leadership, resilience, and the growing presence of Black healthcare professionals across the North. As the former Vice President of the Registered Nurses Association of Northwest Territories and Nunavut (now CANNN), he continues to champion nursing excellence, mentorship, and community-driven healthcare innovation. His work remains deeply rooted in a commitment to empowering the communities he serves.
